Gaewiskii—Bourbon Pecan Pie Cocktail
Most of my cocktail inspirations come from mysterious travelers. They come to The Summoning Grounds looking for comfort and, when possible, familiarity. It never fails that I get asked to make something esoteric and practically unheard of in Lower Ryknût. A weary traveler once asked for some pecan pie after spotting a dish of pecans at the bar. I didn’t have the patience to send someone off to the bakery to fulfill this request but I had just happened to be doing experiments with the nuts anyway. I had previously prepared a liqueur from a batch of pecans and thought I could recreate the flavor of the pie with it. Pecan liqueur is too sweet to sip on its own if you want to replicate the flavor of pie. But I thought I could offset the sweetness with some hooch. Thus was my bourbon pecan pie, the “Gaewiskii”, born.
I know what you’re thinking. Pecan pie isn’t exactly esoteric. In fact, in some parts of some worlds, it’s quite pedestrian. Nonetheless, when this stranger asked me for “gelisqi” I had to ask him to write it down. The script, while beautiful, was unintelligible to me despite my focus on the arcane. I knew if I struggled with it, others would too. So I have changed the spelling to be more phonetic for those of us fluent in Common. Without further ado, here is how you make the bourbon pecan pie cocktail that the regulars now call Gaewiskii. Rhymes with day whiskey.
Note from Patrick:
I know vodka seems an unlikely pairing here at first glance. Trust me, it works. Bourbon has such a strong flavor that if you use too much of it, you will overwhelm the subtlety of the pecan liqueur’s flavor profile. Adding a little vodka is a way to get a good volume (this drink is 3 ounces total) without distorting the flavor since vodka pretty much has no flavor except for the ethanol itself.
